Is your business running your life? Are you one of those business owners that’s working nearly all the time?
Do you feel overworked and have no idea how you can turn the situation around?
You started your business in order to help your clients AND as a way so you could hit your BIG money goals. Yet, you’re so busy working only on fulfilling your client’s projects that you’re left with NO time to market your services to new, potential clients.
Now, you may feel trapped with your current clients because you can’t afford to have them stop working with you. So, you keep working with your existing clients either on a project or retainer basis, even though you’re NOT actually charging enough.
You figure you don’t want to lose them, and some money is better than no money, right?
Is this you?
In today’s post, I’m going to be sharing what has worked for me and my clients when you’re working too much and feel as though your business is running your life.
Let’s get into it. 👇🏽
You Have the Ability to Change Your Situation
First, I’m going to tell you something that you may not like hearing. And it’s…
You’ve put yourself in this situation—no one else.
The GOOD news though is that because you’re responsible for your situation and your current reality, you also have the ability to turn it around.
And I have some tips for you to do exactly that!
1. Be Aware of Your Situation
The very first step is to create awareness. This is a huge part of the solution. You need to understand and acknowledge that you no longer want this situation to continue in your business.
Because you need to be aware of the problem to find the solution, right?
Whether you are feeling like:
- You’re overworked
- You’re undercharging
- You don’t have the time freedom you desire in your business
You need to get clear on what you dislike about your current situation so that you can create a NEW reality.
Once you acknowledge what you want in your business and life, everything else falls into place much easier.
2. Decide That You’re Determined to Change the Situation
The next step is to get clear on what it will take for you to change things.
This is a critical part of turning your situation around and not having your business run your life.
And I won’t lie to you – this isn’t going to be easy, in fact it’s going to be quite challenging.
But you have to go through these challenges so that in the end, you create a business that’s truly SUSTAINABLE business.
Otherwise, it doesn’t matter how passionate you are, or how much you love your work.
When you push yourself too much and allow your business to run your life, you neglect your self-care, and you reduce the chances that your business will be around for the long-haul.
Once you’ve gotten clarity on what you’re unhappy with in your business, and you create commitment to change, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
Tips on How to Not Let Your Business Run Your Life
1. Make a List of the Things You Don’t Like In Your Business
Start by making a list of things that you don’t like in your business, and what’s NOT working.
For me, I realized that working on several projects at the same time with different clients was really starting to get to me.
It meant I couldn’t charge enough for my services and therefore wasn’t earning as much as I would like.
You also want to make a list of the situations that make you feel overworked in your business.
For example, I realized that I tend to put myself at the bottom of my list when running my business. And this would cause me to not take time for myself, eventually leading to burnout.
And yes, I know, you might think that this is not a very positive approach to look at your business in this light.
But we must first get clear on what is going WRONG if we want to get it RIGHT.
2. Make a List of the Things That Work Well in Your Business
The next thing you’re going to do is make a list of all the things that work well in your business.
What are the specific things you enjoy about your business? What do you feel is running smoothly, just as it should?
For me…I appreciate my clients and the work we do together. I also like that I have a lot of flexibility with my time, which gives me a lot of freedom in life.
This initial exercise aims to create a positive perspective that will support you through this process.
3. Have a Clear Vision of Your Ideal Business
Think about what you want your business to look like. Get clear on *exactly* how your dream business makes you feel.
For example, you might like to work on one project at a time (and this is where I realized I needed to make changes!) with clients that value your services and appreciate the value you provide.
Get down to the nitty gritty.
What does a typical day in your business look like? Do you have a team? How often do you take vacations? What’s your income like?

4. Start Restructuring Your Business Offers
One of the most obvious signs your business is running your life is that you don’t have a branded system. With a branded system, you’re able to sell your offers in a way that offers more value to your clients without working extra hours.
It allows you to serve your clients more efficiently and positions yourself as a high-end service provider.
This might sound like it’s not that hard. But what happens is you start to see how much more value your clients receive through your redesigned offer, which will help you stay motivated to continue with the restructuring!
5. Get Additional Support
Now that you’ve looked at how to restructure your offers, the next step is getting additional support. And you might believe you must do everything in your business to provide the best of work, but this is NOT true!
Having additional support to help you with your business allows you to create more value for your clients, work fewer hours per week, and make sure that you’re putting yourself on the highest end of the pricing structure.
If you feel like your business is running your life, you probably aren’t charging enough in order to be able to AFFORD this additional support. Meaning you’re forcing yourself to do it ALL on your own. 😩
Talk about overwhelm.
Increasing your rates so you can hire support is the first step. Once you’re able to bring on support, you must learn to effectively delegate and trust that you WILL find awesome team members to help you successfully run your business.
Remember, by bringing on additional support you’re able to serve your clients and serve you at an even higher level. 💪🏽
6. Integrate a High-Value Offer
If you’re not ready yet to completely switch over to a high ticket business model, I suggest that you integrate a high-value offer as a part of your business structure.
A great place to start is creating an offer that’s more or less three times the value of what you’re currently charging.
This allows you to free up your time. Because tripling your price does NOT mean you need to work three times harder. ❌
You’ll no longer feel hostage to your business.
You won’t have to be constantly working or thinking about your business.
You’ll be able to do MORE of what you want and STOP having your business run your life!
There’s a chance you’ll upset some people in the process. You might have to stop working with some of your current clients.
An excellent way to manage this change is by consulting with your current clients, so they know what’s next in their relationship with you.
But even if you have to let a client or two go, it is SO worth it to integrate a high-value offer so you can increase your average customer value.
